πWhy Nigerian Media Businesses Need New Revenue Streams
Nigeria's digital publishers face growing pressure to rethink how they make money as changes in online discovery reshape the media industry.
At its annual conference in Lagos, the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) urged media businesses to embrace artificial intelligence (AI), strengthen search engine optimisation (SEO) and diversify their revenue sources beyond advertising and sponsored content.
According to Newscoven, speakers highlighted the challenges publishers face as audience behaviour changes and AI-powered search influences how people find information.
Beyond Display Advertising
Advertising remains an important source of revenue for digital publishers, but relying on it exclusively can expose businesses to fluctuations in ad rates, search traffic and audience engagement.
Diversification offers another route to sustainability. Publishers can explore paid digital products, business tools, industry reports, subscriptions and clearly labelled brand partnerships, depending on their audience and market.
AI and SEO can also help publishers improve content discovery and work more efficiently, although neither guarantees traffic growth or revenue.
Why It Matters
For O-Feed, the message is clear: building a sustainable media business requires more than attracting page views.
Business toolkits, sponsored industry reports and relevant commercial partnerships could complement display advertising. The priority should be testing what readers genuinely find useful and are willing to pay for before committing significant resources.
